Capcom Plans to Evolve RE Engine Into an "AI-Generation Game Engine"
At its own tech conference, Capcom outlined its REX project, a plan to gradually upgrade RE Engine so AI can help build and test games, but not make art.

What Capcom announced
Capcom says it wants to turn RE Engine, the in-house technology behind its recent run of hits, into what one of its programmers called an "AI-generation game engine." The plan was laid out at the company's Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026.
Ishida gave a talk on the REX project, titled "The Outlook and Future of the REX Project, Further Evolving the RE Engine for the Next Generation." The details were reported by Japanese outlet GameBiz and picked up by IGN, VGC and PC Gamer.
RE Engine debuted with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. Capcom has since used it for nearly 30 games.

Why Capcom is doing it
According to the reports, Ishida named three problems. Modern games are so large that even simple processes take a long time. More than 2,000 people now use the engine, so it needs to be easy for everyone. And Capcom considers integrating AI into development workflows essential for streamlining future work.
Rather than build a new engine from scratch, Capcom says it will add REX improvements gradually. The project covers performance, tools, development efficiency and quality assurance.
How AI fits in
REX will unify the engine under a very common programming language. IGN's report quotes GameBiz calling it the "world's most common programming language," though the sources don't name it. Ishida said this makes development easier for AI to understand. In future, he said, AI could automatically create programs and run test plays to look for bugs.
Capcom also plans to make some of its technologies publicly available online so people can use them for AI training.
PC Gamer says REX involves six programs combining AI and machine learning with the engine. It names four:
- Re:Dox translates different kinds of data into a common set of rules for faster processing.
- RE:UI offers AI-assisted optimization of the engine's development tools.
- RE: Runtime animates large groups of objects and characters together instead of one by one.
- RE: Flows is meant to simplify turning game mechanic ideas into a standardized programming language.
PC Gamer stresses that "AI-generation" appears to mean an engine built for the AI era, not a generative AI engine. That is the outlet's reading, not a Capcom definition.
Capcom's stated line on AI art
The announcement matches Capcom's earlier position. At a March 2026 shareholders meeting, the company said it would not implement AI-generated assets in its games. It did say it plans to use AI proactively to improve development efficiency, in areas including graphics, sound and programming.
Capcom VP Shinichi Inoue has also said the company sees AI "not for creating art, but for unleashing the potential of creators."

What happens next
The sources give no release dates or timeline for the REX features, and describe the work as incremental. Whether the open technologies for AI training are released, and in what form, will be a point to watch.
