What happened

Portugal's football federation confirmed on Saturday that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo. The move follows his departure from the national team camp ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark.

According to ESPN, Ronaldo left after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. He accused Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time after being left on the bench against Norway. AFP reports he left the camp on September 30, the day before the Denmark game, which Portugal won 4-2.

Ronaldo later apologized to teammates and supporters. He said he should not have left and asked the federation to punish him.

What the suspension involves

The FPF said the proceedings followed a decision by its Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026. Ronaldo was first placed under an automatic provisional suspension, and a further suspension was then imposed.

The federation referred the case to its Disciplinary Investigation Commission and designated it "urgent." Details of the process will stay confidential until the investigation concludes, so the length and form of any sanction are unknown.

Some Spanish-language headlines have floated a possible six-month ban. The sources do not back that up with any detail, so treat it as speculation.

Ronaldo's place in the squad

The sources do not say whether the suspension rules him out of specific matches or what it means for his long-term place in the team. Ronaldo said earlier this week that he would accept whatever punishment is handed down and that he still wants to play for Portugal.

Meanwhile, he is playing for his club. On Friday he scored the opening goal in Al Nassr's 3-0 win over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League. It was reportedly the 980th goal of his career. Al Nassr, the defending champions, sit level on points with leader Al Qadsiah and are behind on goal difference.

What happens next

The next step is the investigation by the Disciplinary Investigation Commission. Because the FPF keeps the proceedings confidential until they finish, the next public news will likely be the outcome itself. No date has been given. Until then, Ronaldo remains provisionally suspended from the national team.
