Rockstar Games has pulled back the curtain on the music of Grand Theft Auto 6. It has revealed the first six radio stations and confirmed that the game will have in-game podcasts for the first time.

Rockstar says the game will have the "biggest and widest ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts yet." You can sample each station now on the official Grand Theft Auto 6 website.

The six stations revealed so far

According to Rockstar's descriptions, the first stations are:

  • Cocoteo FM: Modern Latin music, hosted by El Martillo and La Gata. It covers bachata, merengue, dembow and reggaeton.
  • Back Country Radio: Renegade country with hosts MW and Delta Dawne. It also features a roving reporter, "swamp meteorologist" Mud Dog Mike, reporting from an airboat.
  • AfroBank FM: African music hosted by Burna and Palmsy. It ranges from 20th-century classics to amapiano and 3-step.
  • The Chamber 106.6: Classic metal from the '80s and beyond, with DJ Kerry and DJ Tom.
  • Flash FM: Described as a Vice City institution playing pop music, with hosts Robyn and Alex.
  • Dirty South Classics: Regional rap and hip-hop classics from Trick and Trina.

Polygon's rundown leaves out Back Country Radio but still says six stations were shared. The Verge and VGC both list it. Polygon also notes the previews are only snippets, running under three minutes in total.

Podcasts and listening on foot

The bigger change may be how you listen. Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto 6 introduces a series of on-demand podcasts, a first for the franchise. Earlier games had talk radio, but those stations ran live whenever you tuned in. VGC says podcasts will work differently, presumably letting players pick episodes and listen when they want. Rockstar has not detailed the interface in the sources reviewed.

Rockstar also confirmed that both radio and podcasts will work on foot. Players can wear headphones or earbuds connected to their character's phone, so they no longer need to be in a car.

The soundtrack

Music is also coming outside the game. Polygon reports the official soundtrack launches Nov. 19 with 34 original tracks, featuring artists such as Travis Scott, Rauw Alejandro and Keith Richards. The Verge says Rockstar's site also lets you hear six singles from the soundtrack, which was announced earlier this month, including artists like Yung Lean and Travis Scott.

What it means for you

If you plan to play on launch day, you can already hear what each station sounds like on Rockstar's site. Those previews are short, so treat them as a taste rather than the full playlist. The sources say these are only the first stations, and The Verge describes the total as "at least six," so more may be revealed. Podcasts and on-foot listening suggest you will be able to keep audio going when you leave your vehicle.
