The biggest release: Modern Warfare 4

Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on October 23, but pre-order players have already had access to part of it. According to Eurogamer, the campaign went live early last Friday for anyone who pre-ordered any edition digitally. Early access to the DMZ extraction shooter mode unlocks for pre-orders on October 20. Traditional multiplayer becomes available on October 23.

Early reception has been strong. Eurogamer reports the game holds a Very Positive (92 percent) rating on Steam from more than 3,100 user reviews, the highest of any Call of Duty in over a decade. Last year's Black Ops 7 sits at Mostly Negative (37 percent). Eurogamer cautions that early players are likely the series' keenest fans, and that ratings can shift once multiplayer opens. IGN scored the campaign 8/10. The campaign runs a little over six hours, Eurogamer says.

Activision has also said that Modern Warfare 4 is the final chapter of that sub-series. Its chief marketing officer, Tyler Bahl, told The Game Business that a future title will be a new sub-franchise and that the groundwork is laid.
