Tropical Storm Isaias Could Form in the Gulf This Week; Texas to Florida Urged to Watch

A low-pressure system called Invest 92L in the southwestern Gulf could become Tropical Storm Isaias as soon as Wednesday or Thursday, with rain likely along the Gulf Coast.

Why people are searching

A disturbance off the coast of eastern Mexico has forecasters and the public watching the Gulf. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has tagged it Invest 92L, which means the agency wants to run specialized computer models on it and send aircraft to investigate.

If it reaches tropical storm strength, it would be named Isaias. According to The Weather Channel, that would make it the ninth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

What we know about the system

According to WESH, the system is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. It has 30-mph winds and a minimum central pressure of 1009 mb. The NHC describes conditions as only marginally favorable for development.

A tropical storm needs a well-defined, closed center and sustained winds of at least 39 mph. The NHC has tentatively scheduled the first hurricane hunter mission for Wednesday afternoon.

The system is expected to move generally east-northeast through the middle of the week and then turn north.

Which regions could be affected

It is too early to say what impacts the northern Gulf Coast might see, the NHC said. The Weather Channel reports that model tracks run from the upper Texas coast to the Florida Panhandle. More of them are starting to trend toward the Panhandle.

Rain chances should rise by Friday in that region. Widespread rain is likely across the Southeast over the weekend. The area is already soaked, so the heaviest totals would be along and east of the storm's track.

Heavy rain can fall well inland and cause flooding in places not used to tropical moisture. Landslides are possible if heavy rain hits higher elevations.

The wind shear question

The biggest uncertainty is wind shear. With the jet stream sagging far to the south, the system may have to fight strong shear along the northern Gulf. Shear can weaken a tropical system or stop it from developing at all.

If the jet stream shifts farther north, there could be a window for more strengthening. The Weather Channel says the system will likely weaken closer to landfall if it moves north through the Gulf.

Background

This has been one of the least active hurricane seasons in years, with El Niño tearing apart some systems. Even so, three named storms have affected Gulf Coast states. Tropical Storm Arthur, a brief June storm, made landfall in Texas. Its remnants dropped 37.53 inches of rain on Alexandria, Louisiana, which The Weather Channel calls the wettest rainfall total from an Atlantic tropical cyclone. Tropical Storm Bertha formed in July in the northeast Gulf.

What it means for you

If you live anywhere from Texas to Florida, check the latest forecast over the next few days and make sure your hurricane plans are ready. Flooding is the main concern flagged in the sources, and it doesn't require a hurricane. Watch the first hurricane hunter findings on Wednesday and any NHC updates on development and track.

Quick answers

When could Isaias form?

The Weather Channel says formation could happen as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. The NHC gives the system an 80% chance of becoming a tropical depression within two days.

Is this expected to be a hurricane?

The sources don't forecast a hurricane. They focus on a possible tropical storm and heavy rain, and say wind shear could limit strengthening.

Where will it hit?

That isn't known yet. Tracks currently range from the upper Texas coast to the Florida Panhandle, and the NHC says it's too early to determine impacts.
