Production on the sequel has been temporarily halted while director Matt Reeves deals with a family matter, and it is too early to say if the 2028 release date is at risk.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have paused filming on The Batman Part 2 while director Matt Reeves deals with a family matter. The movie was in the middle of shooting, and nobody has said how long the break will last.

What the studio said

DC Studios gave a statement to Deadline, which was relayed by outlets including Polygon and IGN. "Production on The Batman Part 2 has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter," the studio said. It added that Reeves "has the full support of DC Studios" and that it looks forward to "continuing the journey soon."

No further detail on the matter has been given. Polygon reports the production was filming in London when it stopped.

What we don't know yet

There is no timeline for Reeves' return or for the end of the pause. IGN notes it is unclear whether Reeves will return to the production or be replaced by another director. The studio's wording, however, describes the pause as temporary and says it is looking forward to continuing soon. It does not mention a replacement.

What it means for the release date

The film is currently dated for Feb. 18, 2028. Deadline's sources say it is too early to tell whether the pause will push that date back. IGN adds that another delay is "certainly not out of the question."

The sequel has already moved a long way. It was originally planned for October 2025 before being shifted to February 2028, and IGN says the reasons for the earlier delays were largely unclear. According to IGN, filming only began earlier this summer, and the movie appeared to be on track for its early 2028 date before this pause.

If the current date holds, nearly six years will have passed since The Batman arrived in theaters in March 2022. That first film also faced an interruption: IGN notes it began shooting at the start of 2020 and was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. It went on to be a critical and commercial success.

Who is in the film

Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb/Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Sebastian Stan will play Harvey Dent. Scarlett Johansson reportedly plays Gilda Dent, and Charles Dance may play Charles Dent. Variety has reported that Barry Keoghan may return as the Joker.

Plot details remain unclear. Fans have speculated from set photos that the Court of Owls and the villain Anarky will appear, while Reeves has said the sequel's villain has "never really been done in a movie before." Reeves calls his Batman films and the spinoff series The Penguin the "Batman Epic Crime Saga."

What happens next

The next thing to watch is an update from DC Studios or Warner Bros. on when filming resumes. That will show whether the Feb. 18, 2028 date can stand. Until then, treat the date as unconfirmed rather than changed, since no one has announced a delay.
