What was announced at NYCC

The Avatar universe is growing. Avatar: Seven Havens will run for two more seasons, and creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko revealed a second new show, Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos. They made both announcements at the Seven Havens panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, the same day the series debuted on Paramount+.

The renewal takes the show to Books 3 and 4. Variety notes that Book 2 does not yet have a premiere date.

About Avatar: Seven Havens

The series is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. It follows Pavi, a young Earthbender who learns she is the new Avatar after Korra. In this era, the title marks her as humanity's destroyer rather than its savior, according to the official description Variety quoted.

Hunted by human and spirit enemies, Pavi and her long-lost twin sister Nisha must uncover their origins and try to save the Seven Havens before the last strongholds of civilization collapse.

The Hollywood Reporter says the show has an intentional old-school 1970s anime look and is more serialized than earlier entries. Polygon describes it as more mystery-driven, slowly revealing Pavi's past and the cause of the cataclysm.

The panel included cast members Saheli Khan, Aishu Devan and Major Curda, plus producers Ethan Spaulding and Sehaj Sethi. Janet Varney, the original voice of Korra, moderated.

The Kuruk series

Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos is produced by Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The Hollywood Reporter calls it the franchise's first action comedy. It follows a 14-year-old Kuruk during a time of peace.

Polygon describes a rebellious teenage Avatar from the Northern Water Tribe who bucks tradition to master the elements. He travels with his pet, Nikik, while his angry teachers chase him and he deals with spirits and pirates.

The sources differ on when it is set. Polygon says centuries before Aang's birth, while Variety says Kuruk lived three generations before Aang. No release date was given in the sources.

Other Avatar news from the panel

  • A Seven Havens podcast is coming. Polygon names it Avatar: Braving the Elements, hosted by Janet Varney and Dante Basco, with weekly interviews with the creators and cast.
  • Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game will get a Seven Havens expansion with character colorways and Sonam's temple stage.
  • An artbook and novelization of the Avatar Aang film will be released Nov. 10.
  • A new Legend of Korra book, The Long Game, will explore the origin of the Red Lotus.
