Steven Spielberg Returns to Transformers as Eighth Film Develops, Michael Bay in Talks
Paramount has brought Steven Spielberg back to oversee the Transformers franchise, with Michael Bay reportedly in early talks to direct the eighth live-action film.

Steven Spielberg is coming back to the Transformers franchise. Paramount Pictures is developing an eighth live-action film, and Spielberg will lead its creative direction while serving as executive producer. There is also word that Michael Bay may return as director.
What we know about Transformers 8
Spielberg will work alongside longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Variety's sources say the aim is a film with a tone similar to the earlier Transformers movies, on which Spielberg had more involvement. He held creative roles on the first two films.
The script is by Jason Fuchs, and the story is set in the present day. The Hollywood Reporter says Spielberg will read the script and sign off on it. Other plot details are being kept under wraps.
Di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will produce.

Where Michael Bay stands
Reports differ slightly here. The Hollywood Reporter says Bay is in talks to possibly direct. Polygon, citing Deadline, describes them as early talks and says Bay reportedly liked Fuchs' script enough to consider returning after a nearly 10-year break.
Variety, however, says no director has been announced and that it is unknown what role Bay might have. Nothing is confirmed.
Bay directed Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), Age of Extinction (2014) and The Last Knight (2017). Travis Knight directed the 1980s-set prequel Bumblebee in 2018.
Cast and the wider franchise
Shia LaBeouf, who played Sam Witwicky in the first film and its sequels, will not return, according to both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. There is no word on a storyline, and Variety says other casting talks are at an early stage.
The franchise has grossed more than $5.4 billion worldwide, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Polygon notes that the post-Bay films have had mixed results. Bumblebee was a modest success, while Rise of the Beasts and the animated Transformers One (2024) underperformed.
Variety also reports that a planned Transformers–G.I. Joe crossover is not going ahead. Paramount is instead developing a new G.I. Joe film with Danny McBride.
What happens next
No release date, director or main cast has been announced. The next things to watch for are an official decision on the director's chair and any early casting news. Until Paramount confirms details, treat Bay's involvement as talks rather than a done deal.
