Oklahoma Stuns No. 1 Texas 27-24 on Tate Sandell's Last-Play Field Goal

Tate Sandell's 47-yard kick as time expired capped a Red River Rivalry upset built on a pick-6, a blocked punt and an offense that managed just 238 yards.

How the Sooners pulled it off

Oklahoma took down the top-ranked team in the country when Sandell's 47-yard field goal split the uprights as time expired. The Sooners (3-2, 1-1 SEC) had been struggling on offense all season, and it showed again. Their offense went three-and-out seven times, according to ESPN.

The win came through defense and special teams. Oklahoma opened with five straight three-and-outs, and Texas went up 7-0 when Arch Manning hit Cam Coleman for a long touchdown. Dakoda Fields then recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to tie the game early in the second quarter.

Lloyd Avant added an Oklahoma touchdown run in the third quarter. Then, with 10:07 left, Manning scrambled under pressure and threw toward Coleman. Safety Peyton Bowen instead intercepted it and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown, putting the Sooners up 24-17.

The finish

Texas answered with a 75-yard drive. Manning's 15-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr. tied it at 24 with 6:32 left.

Gianni Spetic then missed a 53-yard field goal wide right with 1:55 remaining. After Oklahoma's three-and-out, Manning's last pass was intercepted by Omarion Robinson with 19 seconds left.

That gave the Sooners the ball at their own 39. John Mateer hit Isaiah Sategna III for gains of 13 and 20 yards, and both catches were upheld on replay review. Sandell, who had made a 53-yarder earlier but missed another from that distance, then won it.

The numbers behind the upset

  • 238 yards: Oklahoma's total, well below its season average of 321 that came into the game, which was last in the SEC. CBS Sports notes it is the second-fewest in a win over an AP No. 1 team this century. Ohio State had 203 against Texas in 2025.
  • Mateer: 18 of 26 for 155 yards.
  • Manning: three touchdown passes, but two costly interceptions.
  • History: It was Oklahoma's eighth win over a top-ranked opponent and third this century. The previous ones came against Missouri in 2007 and Nebraska in 2000. Oklahoma had been 0-4-1 against a No. 1 Texas team before this.
  • Triple-score game: CBS says it was Oklahoma's first game with offensive, defensive and special teams touchdowns since 2016 against Kansas.

Oklahoma had lost 41-13 at No. 2 Georgia two weeks earlier.

What happens next

Texas now has a difficult stretch. Its next five games are against Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri and LSU, though CBS suggests Florida may fall out of the rankings after losing to South Carolina. The Longhorns also have a notable mark this season. They beat then-No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 after trailing by double digits, then lost this game after leading by double digits as No. 1. Oklahoma, meanwhile, will try to show that this win can fix an offense that is last in the SEC.
