Nicolas Cage used a New York Comic Con panel to say he did not agree to an AI waiver on "Spider-Noir" and likely won't return to Amazon's studio. He also appeared to be the first to announce that he may join "True Detective."

What Cage said about Amazon and AI

Speaking at a "Spotlight" panel, Cage talked about how an actor survives in a fast-changing industry. He pointed to Amazon's reported $50 billion investment in OpenAI, a figure he cited himself.

"I am not an AI-friendly actor," he said, adding that he did not sign the waiver allowing AI to be used on "Spider-Noir." He said he's probably not going to work with that studio again, "but that's okay."

Variety reports that Amazon allegedly asked him to sign the waiver. The sources do not include a response from Amazon, and the terms of the waiver were not described.

Spider-Noir's short run

"Spider-Noir" was Cage's first leading role in a TV series. Variety reports Amazon canceled it after one season last month, days before the first weekend of the Emmy Awards. The show had 11 nominations, the most of any Prime Video program this year.

Variety also says the series drew 2.6 billion minutes viewed in its first six weeks. It adds that critics and audiences praised it. Cage did not say the cancellation was linked to the waiver, and the sources don't suggest a connection.

The True Detective tease

Cage said he'll probably do another season of television because he doesn't want to make too many films back to back. "I think I might do a season of True Detective," he said, then asked whether it was okay that he was "the first to announce that."

Deadline notes he has apparently been in talks for a role since last year, and describes the remarks as seeming to confirm Season 5 rumors. HBO did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment, so the casting is not officially confirmed.

Gen Z directors and what's next on his slate

Cage said he wants to work with Gen Z filmmakers who build their work "from scratch and by hand," including through YouTube culture. He praised "Backrooms" director Kane Parsons, whose film is now A24's highest-grossing release, according to Variety.

The Hollywood Reporter says Cage is currently working on the film "Perish" in Minneapolis. He also joked about a "National Treasure" sequel, though he said he hadn't signed up for one.

What happens next

Watch for an official word from HBO on whether Cage is joining "True Detective," as nothing is confirmed beyond his own comments. Cage's film "Perish" is in production. No release date or timing for any new TV role was given in the sources.
