A new Knightmare game is on the way. Eurogamer reports that a free, officially licensed point-and-click adventure based on the cult British children's TV show is in development, and it is due on PC next year to mark the show's 40th anniversary.

The game is being built with the original voice cast.

What we know about the game

The project is being made by a team led by writer and designer Ewen Watson. According to Eurogamer, Knightmare creator Tim Child is supporting it.

Watson says the art was drawn by hand. He stressed that "everything you see and hear is made by real humans", as relayed by VGC.

It is meant to be a short adventure. Watson estimates it will take a couple of hours to finish.

One notable change is the removal of the players' life force meter, a well-remembered part of the show. According to the report, it was dropped to give players the time they need to explore.

Who is returning

Much of the TV cast is back. The sources name these returning actors and roles:

  • Hugo Myatt as Treguard
  • Mark Knight as Lord Fear
  • Clifford Barry as Brother Strange
  • Edmund Dehn as Gumboil the Knight
  • Iona Kennedy as Greystagg
  • Paul Valentine and Alec Westwood as the jesters Motley and Folly

About the TV show

Knightmare aired on ITV between 1987 and 1994. In each episode, three children sat with Treguard, the Dungeon Master. They guided a fourth team member, the Dungeoneer, through a hand-painted dungeon by solving riddles, casting spells and trying to avoid traps.

Eurogamer says the show introduced a generation of kids to fantasy RPGs and computer games. It also returned for a special one-off episode on YouTube 13 years ago.

What it means for you

If you want to play, you will need a PC. Because the game is free, you should not have to pay to try it, though the sources do not say where it will be released. The report says there are no plans to bring it to consoles.

Expect a short experience rather than a long RPG. The sources give only "next year" as the timing, with no exact release date.
