Witchbrook Will Let Switch 1 and Switch 2 Players Play Together at Launch

A Chucklefish developer says Switch 1 and Switch 2 owners will be able to play Witchbrook together from day one, reversing an earlier message about adding it later.

Witchbrook, the cosy witch RPG from Chucklefish, will let Switch 1 and Switch 2 owners play with each other when it launches. That matters for anyone deciding which console to buy it on, because it suggests the two versions won't split players apart.

What the developer said

According to Nintendo Life, which credits Smash Jump for spotting it, one of the game's developers posted on the Witchbrook Discord late last month. That first message said Switch 1-to-2 crossplay would not be ready at launch but would be added later.

The developer then followed up with a correction. The update read: "Update: Switch 1 and 2 will be able to play together". The short note doesn't explain what changed or how the feature will work.

What we don't know yet

The confirmation comes from a Discord message, not a full announcement, and the source gives few details. It doesn't say how players will join each other, whether every mode supports it, or whether any limits apply.

Nintendo Life also describes this as not quite the full crossplay announcement some fans are hoping for. Its report covers only Switch 1 and Switch 2 play, and it doesn't confirm crossplay with other platforms.

Release date and background

Witchbrook's release date, 28 January, was revealed in last month's Indie World Showcase, according to Nintendo Life. The game has been in the spotlight for years, and the outlet says the latest footage in the showcase looked dense.

Nintendo Life also says the game was delayed because the developer wanted more time to build out the world and its inhabitants. Its report doesn't spell out the exact dates of that delay, so we've left them out.

What it means for you

If you're buying Witchbrook, you shouldn't have to pick a console just to play with friends who own the other Switch, based on the developer's latest word. A Switch 1 owner and a Switch 2 owner should be able to share a world from launch day.

Because the news rests on a Discord note, it's worth watching Chucklefish's official channels and the store page for fuller details before launch. If you were hoping for crossplay with other platforms, nothing in the current reports confirms it.
