Bethesda Confirms The Elder Scrolls VI Is Called Sentinel, With No Release Date

Bethesda used its 40th anniversary video to reveal the full title, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, with a short teaser and a logo but no release window.

What Bethesda announced

The next Elder Scrolls game now has a name. Bethesda confirmed the title during a video celebrating the studio's 40th anniversary, with Todd Howard presenting the news. The Verge reports that Howard called it the "perfect time" to name the game.

The Verge says the video runs under 10 minutes. Push Square reports the confirmation comes through a very brief trailer at its end. The Verge describes the Xbox Wire post about the reveal as literally just a picture of the logo.

It has been more than eight years since Bethesda first announced the game. IGN notes it was first revealed in 2018.

What the teaser shows

According to Push Square, the teaser shows sand blowing across an Elder Scroll. It ends with a quote from Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell: "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate."

The name points to the setting. Sentinel is a city in Hammerfell, the province of the Redguards on the continent of Tamriel. IGN says it sits on the northwest coast beside Iliac Bay. Push Square describes it as both a capital city and a kingdom within Hammerfell.

IGN places Hammerfell due west of Cyrodiil, where Oblivion was set, and southwest of Skyrim. The Verge adds that the province has appeared in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online.

What is still unknown

Bethesda gave no release window, platforms or gameplay details. The Verge says no further information on the game was shared.

IGN reports that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma saw a demo of the game earlier this summer. IGN says she teased the subtitle in a post by replacing it with eight asterisks, and "Sentinel" has eight letters. The Verge also reported last week that Bethesda planned to name the game in November.

On platforms, IGN notes Sharma's renewed focus on console exclusives and says it remains to be seen whether the game will come to PlayStation. That is the outlet's observation, not a confirmation from Microsoft or Bethesda. IGN also says players likely have at least a couple more years to wait, which is its own estimate.

Bethesda also noted that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still the studio's most played game. IGN confirmed with Bethesda that this refers to total lifetime players.

What happens next

Bethesda has not set a date for its next update on the game. IGN is hoping for a proper reveal at next year's Xbox Showcase in June, but that is the outlet's hope, not an announcement. Until then, the name, logo and teaser are all that has been officially confirmed.
