A documentary about BioWare has been announced just weeks after Electronic Arts shut the studio down. According to Push Square, EA closed BioWare as part of a wider round of layoffs, and the new Mass Effect game the team was working on was cancelled as well.

Against that backdrop, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is now in the works. It is set to arrive next year, though the sources do not give an exact release date.

Who is making it

The film comes from Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie, who are producing for Canada's Super Channel. Push Square says the documentary appears to chart the company's full history, from its founding in 1995 through to its closure.

Deadline reports that filming started two years ago. That means the project was under way well before the studio's shutdown, even though the announcement has landed in its aftermath.

Who appears in it

The documentary is endorsed by BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, and both are set to appear on screen. The line-up also includes:

  • Geoff Keighley
  • Voice actor Jennifer Hale
  • Former EA CEO John Riccitiello

Push Square says "many other figures" will take part too, but the sources do not name them.

How it ties to the closure

The sources do not say the film was made because of the closure. The timeline in the reports suggests otherwise, since filming began two years ago. What the closure changes is the context: the film now covers the studio's full life story, including its end.

Push Square describes BioWare as a developer known for many beloved contributions to the RPG genre. Its readers' reactions in the comments range from interest in watching the film to doubts about how a new Mass Effect would have turned out.

What it means for you

If you want to follow the project, the film has an official site where you can sign up for updates. No streaming platform, broadcast date or price has been confirmed in the sources, so it is too early to say where or how you will be able to watch it. For now, the only timing given is "next year".
